Hockey Player suffers Chronic Brain Injury

by jkronson on March 4, 2011

Today the LA Times reported that BU researchers found evidence of chronic brain degeneration in former hockey player Bob Probert’s brain. The pugilist died last summer from a heart attack at the young age of 45. It would seem that all the punishment he took during his career took its toll. Probert was an “enforcer ” for Chicago and Detroit and was involved in countless numbers of fights. Hockey is a rough game already and Probert literally added brain insult to injury.
It begs the question ” are the professional sports leagues doing enough to crackdown on career-threatening injuries”?

Sidney Crosby, the best hockey player in the world bar none, hasn’t played in three months because of a concussion. Having played hockey at a high competitive level growing up in Canada, I can attest that the helmet and full facemask we wore definitely protected our bones and face. Our brains however… we’ll have to wait and see.
